Repair of Penile and Scrotal skin defects

Abstract
Repair of injuries to the scrotum and penis resulting usualy from industrial accidents, from surgical accidents as in circumcision and from the side effects of chemical injection, presents considerable problems, but when the necessity for such repair does arise a satifactory solution is of the utmost desirability. Those injuries and their sequelae are most disturbing to the patients and present to the surgeon a reconstruction problem. Avulsion of the skin of the penis and of the scrotum, needless to say, creates a very acute problem for saving the testis, for covering the penis, and for gaining rehabilitation of the functions of the areas. We report ten succesfuly repaired cases of penile and scrotal skin defects. Two of them were scrotal sac injuries and 8 were penile skin injuries. Split thickness skin graft and simple rotation flap from hairy scrotal region were aplied.
The results were summarized as follows.
1) Split thickness skin graft is as satisfactory as skin flap from scrotal & thigh in aspects of .texture, elasticity, function and appearence.
2) The average length of safety period in foreign body injection in gential organ for porpose of aurgumentation was 4 to 5 yeares as compared to average length of 10 to 15 years in other parts of the body.
3) Earlyy spilt thickness skin graft yielded a better outcome than delayed graft.
4) Average period from graft to healing is from 1 to 2 weeks.
5) Tub-bathing for at least 10 days prior to skin graft was required for succesful wound healing.
